Named for the ‘tails’ on their hindwings, Two-Tailed Swallowtails are the largest butterflies in Alberta. They even spend the winter here, curled up in their chrysalides as pupae! Emerging in the early summer, adult butterflies like to feed on many native wildflowers, including Meadow Blazing Star.

Almost 90% of all flowering plants and over 1/3 of global food crops rely on pollinators for fertilization. Without pollinators, humans and terrestrial ecosystems would not be able to survive! That’s because pollination is necessary for plants to reproduce.

ﮫ How can you help pollinators? ﮫ

  • Plant native species in your garden. Most plant species found at your local garden centres are not native to your region—many are even invasive! Do your research before you plant.
  • Reduce your area of lawn grass. Grass lawns offer little food or shelter for most wildlife, including pollinators. Plant some native species instead!
  • Butterflies, bees, moths, flies, beetles, ants and wasps are all important pollinators—let them do their thing!
